If you’re curious about other folding techniques, be sure to check out Part 3 of this series. It offers a different method for creating a parchment pouch, giving you even more gifting options.

Materials Needed:

  • Parchment paper – What I use from Amazon Unbleached Parchment Paper *
  • Ruler
  • Pen (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Labels (optional) – The labels I use in this in this tutorial from Amazon – Labels *
  • Washi tape or sewing machine (optional)
  • Dehydrated Sour Dough Starter

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Parchment Paper

Cut a piece of parchment paper to 5 x 10 inches.

Step 2: Mark 1/2 Inch From the top

Mark or fold a 1/2-inch line down from the top edges on both sides.

Step 3: Create the Base Fold

Fold the bottom up to the 1/2-inch marks and crease it firmly.

Step 4: Fold Down the 1/2 inch top piece

Fold the 1/2 inch piece down.

Step 5: Mark 3 inches in on both sides

You will want to mark 3 inches in on both sides.

Step 6: Fold down the top again

Take the already folded down 1/2 inch piece and fold it over 1 more time to create a “seal”.

Step 7: Create the Side Folds

Fold the flaps outward to form “wings.” Make sure to keep the 1/2-inch folded edge to the outside.

Step 8: Assemble the Package

Tuck the side folds underneath the main body to create the pouch. If it doesn’t sit flat, just flip which side you are tucking in.

Secure the Package (Optional)

You can leave the package as is or secure it by:

Using washi tape (add a dab of glue since parchment is slippery). Place a piece of washi tape on the edge and fold it over.

Sewing with a machine for a more secure seal. Just a note: This is much easier on a sewing machine. Hand stitching did not work out so well for me.

Now it’s time to fill, seal and add the finishing touches

Spoon in 1 tablespoon of dehydrated sourdough starter, fold the top flap down, and tuck it in to seal.

Use 2-inch round labels * or any labels that will fit to add a professional-looking touch that folds neatly over the top of the package.
