Why I Started Homesteading: Finding Natural Ways in Modern Days

Ever feel like there’s gotta be more to life than what conventional wisdom tells us? That’s exactly how I felt before I stumbled into homesteading. It wasn’t some grand plan – just a desperate search for answers.

I’ve always been a city girl, surrounded by convenience. Everything’s still just a quick trip to the store away. But something wasn’t right. My health was a mess, and the medical system kept coming up short. I needed answers they couldn’t seem to give me.

So, almost 20 years ago, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started researching alternative health practices, which led me down the rabbit hole of herbalism.

That first little herb garden changed everything.

From there, it snowballed. If I could grow herbs, why not veggies too? Before I knew it, I was researching composting, companion planting, and natural pest control. My small garden experiment grew into a passion for natural living, right here in the heart of the city.

But homesteading isn’t just about growing things (though that’s a huge part of it). It’s about connection – to our food, to age-old skills, to a more natural way of living. There’s something deeply satisfying about working with your hands, whether it’s mixing up herbal remedies, kneading bread dough, or tending to plants.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up my modern conveniences! But I’ve found a balance, a way to blend those natural, time-tested practices with our busy city lives. It’s about making choices – what skills do I want to learn? What can I make instead of buy? How can I live a bit more naturally in this concrete jungle?

Homesteading has taught me patience. Herbs don’t reveal their secrets overnight, and neither do new skills. But there’s joy in the learning process. Every mistake is a lesson, every success a celebration.

It’s also shown me the power of community. Swapping seeds with neighbors, trading homemade tinctures for fresh produce, sharing tips and tricks – there’s a beautiful give-and-take that happens when you start living this way, even in the city.

I’m not perfect. There are still plenty of store-bought items in my pantry. But every small step towards a more natural, self-sufficient life feels like a victory. Whether it’s crafting my own herbal tea blends, preserving a small harvest, or figuring out how to fix that leaky faucet – it all adds up.

That’s why I started this website. To share what I’ve learned, to connect with others on this journey, and to keep exploring those natural ways in our modern days. Because I believe we can have the best of both worlds – the wisdom of the past and the innovations of today, all while living in the city.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a countryside homestead or just want to grow some herbs on your windowsill, welcome! There’s room for everyone on this journey. Let’s rediscover those natural ways, one small step at a time.

What about you? What sparked your interest in natural living or homesteading? I’d love to hear your story in the comments below!
